Beno truly stood out as an exceptional canine companion. His absence will undeniably create a significant void within the program, and his unique presence will be impossible to replace.

Beno's capabilities were evident from the early stages of the program. During the third week of training, alongside his handler, he was deployed to apprehend a suspected poaching group engaged in illegal rhino hunting. Beno's swift tracking led to the identification and arrest of one of the suspects. On that day, thanks to Beno's efforts, a rhino's life was spared. The tales of Beno's remarkable contributions to conservation are numerous and heartwarming. He was a truly wonderful dog who dedicated himself wholeheartedly to his work. His absence will be deeply felt and he will be greatly missed.

A great blind training track. Teams are deployed into an area and given a 500 x 500 metre area to cut spoor (find footprints). They decide whether to pursue or call in K9. They did call in K9 to speed up the follow up. This little dog doesn’t know how not to work.

-Blue is the security team flanking the K9 team
-Green is K9

END OF WATCH

Last week we lost one of our four legged partners.

At a check point a few years ago, Alex and his handler were searching vehicles. A young girl traveling with her family heard Alex’s handler talking to her parents. Alex searched their vehicle and then they went on their way only to return a few hours later. Alex and his handler were still there, reminding would be poachers that it was not wise to mess around with the ‘Wiseman’. The little girl had been so impressed by her first encounter that she had drawn a picture. Grateful for the hard work from Alex and his team.

En route back from operations the vehicle was in a traffic accident and ended up off the road. Three men and four dogs were inside. If it wasn’t for the sturdy design of the kennels the situation would have been much worse. Unfortunately our ‘Wiseman’ Alex died on the way to the veterinarian. All other dogs and handlers are fine with a few minor bumps and bruises.

Alex had a successful time with Namibia’s Ministry of Environment Forestry and Tourism. He helped the team with countless illegal wildlife product seizures. His goofy attitude was always noticed and people tended to migrate towards him. He epitomized the work hard, play hard attitude. When called for, he was there, reliable as ever.

No doubt, Alex clumsily ran over the rainbow bridge to all the treats and toys he could muster. We know he still has our back… but he knows he can rest easy…

…we’ll take it from here pal.

Coaching has been known to boost confidence, improve work performance, and build effective communication.

A good mentor mustn’t forget the difference between training and testing either.

In training we find it critical to provide reassurance while shaping the team. Whether it is handler development - fine tuning the muscle memory or, in the development of the dog - building consistent behavior in inconsistent environments.

Regardless if your trainer isn’t coaching you while you’re working with your dog. Then get them to come out and critique you.

Video gives perspective and allows the handler to relive the learning experience. It’s good for a handler to see themselves from afar but it’s equally valuable for a handler to see the instructors perspective.

Perspectives of K9 tracking in an urban environment often produce a binary response of ‘possible’ or ‘not possible’.

With our training approach, it is absolutely possible. Some dogs might take longer than others…. Regardless, by the time you have finished our K9 tracking and trailing course you will have the tools to take your dog to the next level.

Indirectly you will find improvements in other areas. Your dog will range out better, find the decoy more efficiently, have better discrimination of odors, identify a hidden threat quicker and be physically fitter.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife manages and pr

The Department of Fish and Wildlife manages and protects California’s wildlife, plants, trees, and habitats. They are responsible for regulatory enforcement and management of related recreational, commercial, scientific, and educational uses. On top of all this, the department prevents illegal poaching across the state.

Invictus K9 is here in California teaching a tracking course during one of the wettest winters in history! Challenge accepted! These handlers are tried and tested with some amazing stats to back it up with. Pair that with some studies showing that one well-trained dog can save approximately 800 personnel hours per year - the CDFW is investing in the training - making use of dogs to quickly help them locate suspects, find missing people and detect concealed evidence.

We are grateful to have been asked here for the next couple of weeks sharing ideas and training with these formidable teams in some pretty nice training areas. More to come!

Lance Corporal Liam Tasker (MiD) & MWD Theo (DM).

On 10th March 2011, Lance Corporal Liam Tasker (26 years old), from Kirkcaldy in Fife, was flown home to rest alongside his Military Working Dog Theo (22 months).

Lance Corporal Tasker made 14 Firearms & Explosives finds during his deployment and received a Mention in Despatches (MiD). His Springer Spaniel, Military Working Dog Theo, was posthumously honoured with the PDSA Dickin Medal (DM) for gallantry.

**** 27.7Km TRAINING SCENARIO****

An incredibly challenging training day. A simulated poaching incident was conducted with role players moving through the park and laying a 27.7km track. A smaller hunter force of two teams responded to conduct the followup. K9 Aya and her handler crushed the first 12.7 km at a blistering 7.7 km/h through exceptionally challenging environments. They nearly caught the poachers three times and were within 50m of them on multiple occasions. The role playing poachers had agreed to take escape routes through the thickest bush to impede the handler and followup team (to be used later as a learning point).

Once the spoor was lost, the K9 was utilized in cutoff locations and it wasn’t practical to employ her again as it was regained. However, the visual trackers eventually cut spoor and closed in on the poachers. The cutoff team were prepositioned well - anticipating potential escape areas. A the perfect moment the poachers were arrested. Job well done. Train hard, fight easy.

These pups are amazing trackers. Both of them crushed their assessments in rural and urban tracking. A short 1000m blind, 60mins cook time, with multiple turns.

The handlers have clearly been training hard. Love the self-casting and focus on the track. Great energy and its infectious!

Basenji Update!

Just heard from the DRC team and the puppies are doing great! Training is working out well and they seem to be hitting their milestones. Thanks to @kel_green for the update! You can see in the video the puppy is tracking well, good concentration and this is about 50% of the track. He finds the washer and while a little slow, the behaviors are starting to come together. This particular area has a high rate of movement of antelope, baboons, hippo and people. So nice to see our little tracker-dog-in-the-making doing so well with his scent discrimination!

The world lost two of its greatest guardians this week. On 8th December, Mark Jenkins and his son, Peter, died after their plane went down during a patrol of Tsavo East National Park. We are still wrapping our minds around this terrible tragedy. Our hearts go out to Clare and Myles, who lost a husband and a father, a son and a brother.

Mark Jenkins was a once-in-a-generation conservationist. He devoted his entire life to protecting East Africa’s wild spaces — and he showed that same dedication as a father, husband, friend, and leader. He was a gentleman and a bush man, equal parts passionate, principled, and practical. Mark was never after recognition or personal glory; he was a team player in every sense.

While his time was cut too short, a man like Mark never really leaves us. His legacy lives on through the wildernesses he helped transform, from the Selous and Serengeti in Tanzania, to Uganda, to swathes of Kenya, the country where he was born and raised. He was a vital member of our team and played a pivotal role in advancing conservation in the Tsavo landscape.

Peter was following in his father’s footsteps and was already a force of nature in his own right. He had completed his conservation degree and was spending time in the field before beginning his training at Sandhurst in April. He had a bright future ahead of him.

The best way we can honour Mark’s memory is to continue the work he started. He is a tough act to follow, but we will carry on in his name. And we believe that the greats never really leave us. Mark and Peter are looking down on us from beyond, their blue eyes ever sparkling.
